This seminar-style training will teach the basics of management and leadership to individual contributors seeking to become more effective leaders. The class size is intended to remain small for maximum tailored impact and will provide instruction, QA, and opportunities for individual development. Individual contributors will learn (1) about leadership: principles, styles, and values (2) be exposed to common challenges with emerging leaders with senior leaders, subordinates, and other stakeholders. Material will be sourced in digestible form from MBA style management tracks, military standards, and psychology of leadership with experience and vignettes provided to re-enforce the material. The four seminar sessions will be focused on (1) Intentionally transitioning from an individual contributor into a leader (how, why – looking at the individual) (2) Leadership styles and methods: how to be a good leader – looking at subordinates (3) Optimized communication, inclusive of crucial and challenging conversations, with executive leadership, stakeholders, or other parties – looking UP, and (4) Themes for common challenges for leaders and possible methods for addressing them, inclusive of vignettes and examples: this final session can be greatly shaped by the students/participants. This seminar is set up to be 4x 2 hr seminars over 4 weeks, but can be tailored.
